Mặc dù vai trò của thể chế chính thức trong việc định hình năng lực đổi mới sáng tạo quốc gia đã được thừa nhận rộng rãi, ảnh hưởng của thể chế phi chính thức vẫn chưa có kết luận thống nhất. Nghiên cứu này xem xét mối liên kết gia đình, một thể chế phi chính thức, có thể ảnh hưởng đến năng lực đổi mới sáng tạo quốc gia thông qua ba cơ chế: mức độ cởi mở đối với tri thức và hợp tác bên ngoài, thái độ đối với chấp nhận rủi ro và phân bổ nguồn lực dựa trên năng lực. Sử dụng Chỉ số Phức tạp Kinh tế (ECI) làm đại diện cho đổi mới sáng tạo, kết quả cho thấy mối liên kết gia đình có quan hệ tiêu cực với năng lực đổi mới sáng tạo. Nghiên cứu góp phần xác định vai trò của mối liên kết gia đình ở cấp quốc gia, phân biệt vốn xã hội gắn kết với vốn xã hội kết nối, và nhấn mạnh tính hữu ích của ECI trong đo lường năng lực đổi mới sáng tạo.
