Study on extraction method and determination of brucine and strychnine from strychnos nux-vomica by HPLC

Abstract

Strychnos nux-vomica is known to be the main source of highly toxic alkaloids such as strychnine (C21H22N2O2) and brucine (C23H26N2O4) which are used in medicine as well as other alkaloids such as colubrin and vomicin. Study on the extraction, evaluation of the content of two important alkaloids extracted from Strychnos nux-vomica seeds such as brucin and strychnin is the basis for evaluating the chemical composition of this drug. This article shows the results of extraction of total alkaloid by three different methods, qualitative evaluation of brucins and strychnin in three extractions by thin-layer chromatography method with the solvent of CH2Cl2:MeOH=5:0.6, detecting substances by ultraviolet light, spraying with Dragendoft reagent and vanillium /H2SO4 reagent. The content of brucin and strychnin is analyzed by liner standard method with HPLC.
