Abstract
Notation and footnote in research works and textbooks are additional explanatory information to the main content. Additional as they are, notation and footnote are indispensable to the accuracy and criticality of scientific and research texts. In terms of etymology, notation is different from annotation; however, definitions of these two terms are not consistent and coherent in different dictionaries. In reality, researchers are not concerned about this difference. Therefore, it is hard to find a research work mainly defining notation. This article aims at (1) explaining dictionary meaning and usage of the word notation; (2) presenting positions of notation in a text; (3) explaining and analyzing the relationship between the word/phrase noted and its notation; (4) and investigating the use of notation in research works in the field of social sciences.
