Abstract

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a powerful analytical tool for solving many problems in stress/strain analysis. However,the FEM method has difficulties in solving the problems of discontinuities because of the need for remeshing and high mesh density.The Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) was developed to overcome these limitations. In this article,the XFEM method is proposed and applied to analyse stress and strain in plates with triangle and circular holes (2D problem).Calculation results are compared with those calculated by finite element method (using ANSYS software) in number of elements and accuracy. The XFEM gives equivalent results in stress and strain as the traditional FEM but with fewer elements.
