α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+ and SiO2: A novel application for improving color rendering index and luminous flux of remote phosphor white LEDs

This paper presents a novel application of SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+ and SiO2 compound for improving the color rendering index (CRI) and the luminous efficacy (LE) of white LEDs. 2%-30% α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+ and 5% SiO2 is added to the remote-phosphor layer in LightTools simulations. The obtained results indicated that LE increases with low α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+ concentration. If more than 18% α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+ are employed, then the LE tends to be reduced. In addition, the red component of remote-phosphor layer should be enhanced with the increasing of α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+, which results in higher CRI values. The above results is explained by Mie-scattering theory, i.e., through the computation of scattering parameters of α-SrO·3B2O3:Sm2+, including scattering coefficient and anisotropy scattering value.
