Pragmatically, an assertive is one type of illocutionary speech acts. The typical function of the assertive is to assert or claim some statement or fact. Noticeably, assertives occur so often in Presidents’ Welcome Messages (PWMs) posted on the official websites of the colleges and universities in the USA. These assertives help to highlight the purpose of PWMs -attracting more and more learners to the higher education institutions. This paper attempts to identify and analyze the assertives used in PWMs in terms of lexical, syntactic and semantic aspects. The findings help to illuminate the linguistic features of assertives commonly found in PWMs.
