Abstract
Steroids from the stem and foliage of red form of Abrus precatorius Linn have been detected by Libermann-Burchard, RosenheimT, Rosenthaler and Salkowski reagents. Chemical constituents of hecxane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts are determined by GC/MS. The total stigmasterol from Abrus precatorius Linn powder is extracted by soxhet in chloroform in 10 hours. The amount of stigmasterol is determined by LC assay on a C18 column, at temperature of 3000C ± 1, using mobile phase of methanol - CH3COOH 0.1% in H2O 99:1 (v/v), at mobility of 0.8 ml/min, injection of 20 µl with detection at 205 nm. Determination of stigmasterol by LC is validated highly with all RSDs less than 2%. The linearity of stigmasterol concentration is in the range of 10–50 ppm and is found to be linear (R = 0.99689). The method proves to be sufficiently precise with LOQ of LC assay of10 ppm.
