Evaluating the use of R407F refrigerant to replace R22 refrigerant in cold food storage room and air conditioners

Abstract

This paper evaluates the study of retrofiting R22 - the refrigerant which is currently used broadly in medium temperature cold storage rooms but will be phased out in 2020 by the friendly environment refrigerant R407C. This experiment is based on an existing cold storage room (t = -20oC) using R22 refrigerant. The result shows that the cooling capacity of R407F refrigerant is sligtly lower than R22 refrigerant, with lower discharge temperature, normal compressor operation, and non flood back happening. As a result, the currently popular R22 refrigerant can be replaced directly by R407F without any equipment substitution. In order to ensure oil returning, we should replace mineral oil used for R22 by Polyester oil (POE)
