A study of electromagnetic distribution and establishing the T equivalent circuit of power transformers by finite element method

Abstract

The transformer is a very important element in the power transmission system. In fact, it is necessary to increase or decrease the voltage several times when transmitting the energy from the power station to consumers. Consequently, researching transformers plays a crucial role in production and operation of the power system. This paper presents two research objectives: to calculate the electromagnetic distribution of transformers and to propose an approach of establishing a T equivalent circuit of transformers without measurement. Thus, an electromagnetic problem in a three-dimensional structure of transformers has been analyzed and calculated based on the finite element method. The research principle is applied in detail with an ABB distribution transformer. The calculated results are compared with the measurements from the manufacturer to verify the model.
