Abstract

Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) is a new storage technology and has many advantages over traditional energy storage methods. In this paper, we propose a Model Predictive Control algorithm (MPC) for a flywheel energy storage system mounted on a DC busbar of a microgrid with renewable energy sources (wind power, solar power). The unusual fluctuations of the renewable energy source will be balanced by FESS (through energy storage or energy discharge), thus maintaining a constant capacity for the microgrid. The results of modeling and simulation on Matlab - Simulink/Simcape software correspond to different fluctuations of the source, the pumped power into the microgrid is always maintained stably, proving that FESS has the ability to overcome the energy fluctuations of solar power and provide low volatility energy to the grid.
