Abstract

Conflicts arising from identity differences often resist resolution, and leave lasting consequences for generations. These conflicts often result from groups’ perception of identity threats. This study examines the impact of identity threat on social group relations through a case study of Jews during their history of exile and the construction of the State of Israel. Drawing upon the theoretical framework of social identity, intergroup relations, and identity threat, this paper explores the historical experience of Jews, highlighting the preservation of Jewish identity and the emergence of perceptions of identity threats in intergroup relations between Jews and other communities. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing identity-based fears for sustainable peace-building.
