Abstract
This study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant, α-amylase inhibitory, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and UV-B-protective activities of crude fucoidan extract from brown algae Sargassum cristaefolium. The results showed that fucoidan extract exhibited antioxidant activity in the ABTS method with an IC50 value of 332.92 ± 13.89 μg/mL, inhibiting the activity of the α-amylase enzyme with an IC50 of 975.73 ± 43.9 μg/mL. The ability to reduce the denaturation of bovine serum albumin protein of the extract was investigated for an IC50 value of 12091.16 ± 487.42 μg/mL. Survey results showed that fucoidan has not yet shown anti-bacterial activity against 4 strains of bacteria that cause human disease. In addition, the UV-B protection ability was investigated at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL with an SPF value of 21.81 ± 0.13. The investigated results show that crude fucoidan extract from Sargassum cristae folium has potential applications in the cosmetic industry and pharmaceuticals.
