Abstract

Arc flash is one of the most common causes of electrical hazards encountered during the operation and maintenance of electrical panels. Incidents caused by arc flash can lead to severe consequences, including fires, explosions, equipment damage, and risks to nearby personnel. The severity of an arc flash is influenced by several factors, especially current values, enclosure dimensions, and electrode configurations. This paper examines how electrode configurations and medium-voltage enclosure dimensions affect arcing current, incident energy (E), and arc flash boundary (AFB) in 11 kV enclosures. The calculation results show that different electrode configurations result in varying arc currents and energy levels. Consequently, arc flash analysis is crucial during system design and operation to implement effective risk mitigation strategies and select suitable personal protective equipment for operators.
