Abstract
In this study, 304 stainless steel samples were plasma-nitrided at 530oC for 4.5 hours. The microstructure and microhardness of sample after nitriding were measured. The results showed that the surface of steel sample had a high hardness (756HV), which tended to decrease from the surface to the core (360HV) with a nitride layer depth of about 10μm and a nitriding layer depth of about 30μm. The hardness distribution showed uniformity from the surface layer to the core of the steel after nitriding. The microstructure analysis indicated that the quality of the nitriding layer was uniform on the surface of the 304 stainless steel sample. In addition, the post-nitriding microstructure included a dark layer evenly distributed on the surface, which is the nitride layer of Cr and Fe with high density and uniformity over the cross-section, thus making the steel sample possess high hardness, leading to increased wear resistance.
