Cửa sông được đánh giá là khu vực nóng về ô nhiễm vi nhựa. Tuy nhiên, dữ liệu về vi nhựa tại cửa sông của khu vực Đông Nam Á vẫn rất hạn chế. Nghiên cứu này đánh giá sự phân bố và các đặc điểm của vi nhựa trong trầm tích và nước mặt của cửa sông Thuận An, tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế. Mật độ vi nhựa dao động từ 35 vi nhựa/m3 đến 175 vi nhựa/m3 trong nước mặt và khoảng 300 vi nhựa/kg đến 2800 vi nhựa/kg trong trầm tích. Vi nhựa có kích thước trong khoảng 300-3000 μm chiếm ưu thế ở cửa sông Thuận An. Vi nhựa có sự đa dạng về màu sắc và vi nhựa dạng sợi được ghi nhận nhiều nhất. Cửa sông Thuận An là khu vực có độ đa dạng sinh học cao, sự phân bố của vi nhựa trong khu vực này có thể ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng đến hệ sinh thái vùng cửa sông và sức khỏe con người.
