Appearance of Danang until the early years of the 20th century through historical documents

Abstract

Danang, or Tourane - its old name under French colonial rule, was the scene of commercial, cultural, religious, military and political interactions between the Nguyen Dynasty and Western countries. From the exploration to the colonial domination process in Indochina, contemporary modern technologies of navigation, cartography, and photography of Westerners created a source of valuable and ancient data, as well as the basis for studies on the ancient appearance of old cities in Vietnam. This study exploits old maps, old photos, or records of Westerners in general, combined with research documents of previous scholars, to partly clarify the image of Danang city until the early years of the 20^th century, before and during the early years of being a French concession.
