Bài nghiên cứu có mục tiêu phân tích hoạt động hợp tác của Mỹ với 05 quốc gia thuộc Tiểu vùng sông Mekong mở rộng (GMS) giai đoạn 2001 - 2024, qua đó khuyến nghị chính sách cho Việt Nam. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy, hoạt động hợp tác trải dài trên các lĩnh vực an ninh - chính trị, kinh tế - thương mại, và văn hóa - xã hội. Hợp tác với Mỹ đã giúp các quốc gia GMS nâng cao năng lực ứng phó với các thách thức an ninh phi truyền thống, phát triển kinh tế và tăng cường kết nối khu vực. Tuy nhiên, nỗ lực tăng cường hợp tác của Mỹ cũng gây ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến tình hình an ninh và phát triển khu vực trong bối cảnh gia tăng cạnh tranh chiến lược giữa Mỹ và Trung Quốc. Theo đó, Việt Nam cần vững vàng đường lối đối ngoại độc lập, tự chủ, tăng cường song phương, nâng tầm đa phương nhằm cân bằng quan hệ với các cường quốc và đa dạng hoá nguồn lực phát triển từ các quốc gia này.
